SPOOK

Spook is a mental representation of some haunting experience. It is also a more informal representation of a ghost or specter. Their specific goal is to frighten or alarm people by haunting their immediate surroundings.

The name spook was first noted around 1867 in the sense of "to walk or act like a ghost" whereas the meaning "to unnerve" dates from around 1935.  So it appears that spooks have gotten scarier over time!

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness - for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

Edgar Allen Poe, Spirits of the Dead
